Piston Valve. One
type of valve used to regulate the flow of steam inside a steam engine or
locomotive is the piston valve. They manage the steam's entry into the
cylinders and subsequent exhaustion, which allows a locomotive to operate
independently. The valve is made up of two piston heads on a shared spindle
that move inside a steam chest, which is essentially a miniature cylinder that
can be found above or below the locomotive's primary cylinders.
The majority of piston valves are of the "inside
admission" variety, in which exhaust steam exits via the space between a
piston head and the end of the steam chest and fresh steam is admitted from the
boiler through the space between the valve's two piston heads. The benefit of
this configuration is that leakage through the gland that isolates the
operating rod of the valve gear from the steam chest is significantly less of a
concern when the gland is exposed to low exhaust pressure rather than full
boiler pressure. We supply our superior quality products to our valuable clients
